Living Rock Academy (LRA) is a private Christian school serving kindergarten through twelfth grades. LRA is situated on twenty-five acres located in a prime area for growth just one mile off Highway 281 at 2500 Bulverde Road, Bulverde, Texas. Bulverde is a suburban town located in Comal County just twenty miles north of downtown San Antonio, Texas. This area has seen unprecedented growth over the last few years. We are an area located in the crossroads of commerce within arm’s reach of a large metropolitan area while providing close access to recreational amenities such as the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, world renowned Texas vineyards and wineries, some of the oldest dance halls in Texas, art and history.
LRA opened its doors in August of 2015. The school is the result of a group of concerned Christian parents from fundamental Bible-teaching churches who had the goal of starting a pre-Kinder-12th grade Christian academy for many reasons.
- Growth of community
- Service to community
- Natural limitation of present schools
- Advanced technology
- Broader curriculum reflecting God’s greatness
One of the first meetings of the founding families involved the naming of our school. Many suggestions were made based on a proposed site for our school. However, it was decided not to focus on a specific location but rather to focus on the Lord and His provisions. The vision of Jesus Christ being the Rock of our core existence and our joy in serving a living Savior led the group to the perfect name: Living Rock Academy.
Stakeholders and board members made the key decision to establish a non-denominational covenant model school and membership-based board structure in order to establish families, faculty, and staff as stakeholders in the school.
Following the decision to move to a covenant model, the board and interested participants spent many hours in refining the purpose, vision, and mission statements. Writing the bylaws and handbooks helped to clarify in the board members’ minds these statements.
The stakeholders and board strived to establish and provide a biblically-based, Christ-centered, and academically-challenging school experience for families in north San Antonio and the greater Hill Country area. While incorporating creative and innovative learning opportunities in the classroom, LRA was designed to teach the students how to take their education into the outside world to see God at work around them and to be the feet of Jesus in service to others.
The Interim Board, under the direction of the Interim Board President, wrote and approved the bylaws to establish Living Rock Academy on June 15, 2015.
The search for a location for the school ranged from FM 306 to 1863. The first site considered was a closed landscaping business on Hwy 281, north of FM 46. Even though it offered plenty of space, the location held other problems. Stakeholders considered several other sites including a community church, a real estate company and several other property sites. Each site had its own limitations for a growing and expanding school. Stakeholders and Board members continued to look for the right location. A parent found twenty-five acres for sale near downtown Bulverde and after much prayer and research of the property, the Board decided to enter negotiations on the purchase of the land.
On June 13, 2015, a family purchased this twenty-five acres at 2500 Bulverde Road as the site for LRA. Another family secured a lease/purchase arrangement with ModSpace for a portable building of approximately 14,000 square feet to be brought in from the Laredo Independent School District. The LRA Interim Board voted to enter the agreement with ModSpace to lease the building with purchase to be completed by 2020. On August 4, 2015, the first of thirteen sections of the portable building was delivered to the site.
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) approved LRA’s application for accreditation on July 9, 2015. The SACS external team will visit the LRA campus on April 11, 2017 in the hopes of approving LRA for accreditation. Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) approved LRA application for membership on June 12, 2015. Initially, the school rented two community churches to begin classes. The elementary classes used Community Bible Church Bulverde at 7100 US-281, Spring Branch, Texas. The secondary school used Hillside Fellowship across the highway at 7055 US-281, Spring Branch, Texas. Living Rock Academy opened its doors at their permanent location at 2500 Bulverde Road on September 8, 2015.
LRA offers six-man football, cross-country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and track and field.
LRA has a Student Senate. The high school leadership body is the Senate. Two individuals are selected from each class by their classmates. The middle school leadership students are the Representatives. Like the Senate, two individuals are selected by their classmates. The purpose of the Student Senate is to provide activities to enhance leadership skills, communication and school spirit.
